Not All Wholesale Products Are Created Equal
If you've ever purchased wholesale products, you've probably learned that not all wholesale products are created equal. If you haven't purchased wholesale products before, you're lucky because you can avoid learning this lesson the hard way.
When purchasing wholesale products, you really need to be careful. Ninety-nine percent of the time you don't get to see the product before you pay for it and most wholesale operations have a no-refund policy. If the wholesale products you ordered aren't what you expected, you usually end up eating the cost. However, there are some tricks of the trade you can implement when shopping for wholesale products. Tips that will help you separate the bad from the good and the scams from the deals.
The first thing you should do when ordering wholesale products is look at what the product is made from. For example, you may order what looks like a beautiful leather jacket in the catalog, only to find that it's nothing more than vinyl when it arrives. If you only spent one or two dollars a jacket, that might not be too much of a problem. But if you spent ten to twenty dollars on vinyl jackets, you're not going to make a profit on them and you're probably going to lose money.
When ordering wholesale products, also make sure that you keep an eye out for replicas. There is nothing wrong with purchasing replicas and there is definitely a market for them, but you need to make sure that you know that you're getting replicas up front. Legitimate wholesale suppliers will be very forthright in the product description that the item is "designer inspired" or a "replica" and they will charge accordingly. This ensures that you know exactly what you're getting when you order these wholesale products and that you're getting them for a low enough price that you'll be able to make a profit.
Having access to detailed product descriptions is also important when purchasing wholesale products. One would-be entrepreneur I knew spent $2.50 each on replica vintage tin lunch boxes. That would have been an absolutely fabulous deal - if the lunch boxes had been more than three inches wide by two inches tall. Had she known the actually size of the product, she would never have paid that price. Remember, a product may look great in the picture, but make sure there's a written description that describes exactly what it is you're buying.
Remember, the wholesale industry does have some things in common with the retail industry - and the fact that some companies are great and others aren't so great is one of those similarities. By keeping these factors in mind, you'll be able to buy quality wholesale products without falling into the common beginner pitfalls.
